The self-cleaning feature of ovens are great, but have you ever run it only to find the window remains streaked and grimy?  While you may find comfort knowing that you’re not the only one facing this problem, you’re probably more interested in learning how to remove those greasy streaks on your glass oven door.  This article provides some tips on how to do this. Read on to learn more about how to clean a glass oven door both inside, outside and everywhere in between.

How Do I Clean My Glass Oven Door On The Outside?

When cleaning a glass oven door, the outside of the door is the simplest.  We will begin here and work our way to the more difficult tasks.

You will need the following:

  • A natural glass cleaner, such as distilled white vinegar or lemon juice
  • A set of microfiber cloths

To clean the outside of the oven door, you must follow these steps:

  • Spray the natural cleaner on the outside area of the glass oven door
  • Wipe the cleaner away using downward strokes with one of the microfiber cloths
  • Repeat the above steps if necessary
  • Using a dry microfiber cloth, buff any remaining streaks from the glass

How Do I Clean My Glass Oven Door On The Inside?

Cleaning the interior of a glass oven door is more complicated than cleaning the outside of the door.  After all, the grease you are planning to remove on the inside of the door has been baking on the glass for days, weeks, months or potentially years.

You will need the following:

  • Half a cup of baking soda
  • Water
  • Microfiber cloths
  • One small to medium-sized bowl
  • A razor blade, but this is optional

To clean the inside of the glass oven door, you must follow these steps:

  • Open the glass oven door and remove any bits of loose grime using a damp microfiber cloth
  • Pour the baking soda into the small or medium-sized bowl
  • Add water to the baking soda slowly to form a paste.  The consistency of the paste should be that of shaving cream
  • Spread the water/baking soda mixture on the interior of the glass oven window
  • Allow the paste to sit on the window for approximately 15 or 20 minutes
  • Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the paste from the window
  • If any grime remains after wiping the paste away, use the razor blade to scrape it off.  Always use the flat edge of the razor blade instead of the corner so you do not scratch the glass.
  • Repeat the above steps if necessary
  • Using a dry microfiber cloth, buff out remaining streaks on the glass

How Do I Clean In Between The Glass On My Oven Door?

When you have cleaned both the outside and inside areas of your glass oven door, it is time to tackle the grime in between those spaces.  This requires some rolling up of the sleeves and breaking out of the tools; however, it is possible to clean the inside of the glass oven door.

You will need the following:

  • The oven’s instruction manual.  If you threw this away a long time ago, it is possible to find one online
  • A clean sheet or towel that you don’t mind dirtying
  • A screwdriver
  • One small to medium-sized bowl
  • Some microfiber cloths
  • Half a cup of baking soda
  • Water
  • One razor blade, but this is optional
  • Someone to help with the task

To clean in between the outside and inside of the glass oven door, you must follow these steps:

  • Open the glass oven door and examine the screws used to hold the door together.  The majority of ovens utilize star screws, so you might need to purchase a star screwdriver before you begin cleaning the glass
  • Prepare the area by playing your towel on the floor where you plan on working
  • Read the oven manual to check how to remove the glass oven door
  • Ask your assistant to help you in taking off the oven door – oven doors are far heavier than you can imagine and you shouldn’t try to do this on your own
  • Lie the oven door on the sheet or towel with the inside of the window facing upwards
  • Remove the screws from the oven door.  In most cases two screws are above the window and two screws are at the base of the door
  • Once the door is apart, place the sides of the door next to each other.  The inner glass of each half should face up
  • Follow the above instructions for cleaning the inside of your glass oven window
  • Using an assistant’s help, reassemble and replace the glass oven door
