You might change your bedding and sheets every week, but when last did you clean your mattress and your bed? If you are similar to most homeowners, you probably never think about cleaning these important furniture pieces. Yet it is recommended to clean this furniture at least 4 times every year.

This may appear to be a task that is pretty daunting, but this task is not as difficult as you may think. Here are a few cleaning basics tips on how to care for your bed and mattress.

Mattress Cleaning

Before we tell you about the cleaning instructions along with the services that Think Maids provides, we will first tell you the reason why your mattress needs cleaning. First, think about the things that you find every time you remove the sheets. In most cases, you will find grit, dust, crumbs, and grime on the mattress pad. In addition, pets and people shed hair, dander, skin cells and whiskers all the time.

All this dirt and grime eventually works its way inside your mattress. If you eat in bed, then this is even more reasons to make sure you clean it, as food spills are sources for bacteria to grow and breed in your mattress.

How To Clean Your Mattress

Cleaning a mattress is, in fact, a somewhat simple process. You should obviously first remove the bedding, your sheets and your mattress pad.

The next step involves choosing between 2 options to clean the mattress.

Mattress Cleaning Option Number 1

First vacuum the mattress using the correct attachment. Make sure you run the vacuum cleaner over the entire surface of the mattress making sure that you get into any crevices and cracks. Remember to also vacuum the sides of the mattress.

Mattress Cleaning Option Number 2

The next option involves steam cleaning the mattress. You can either rent one or buy one. The steam cleaning method provides a cleaning process that is more effective due to the water vapor that penetrates the mattress. Before using a steam cleaner for the entire mattress, make sure you conduct a spot-test to ensure it is safe to use on the rest of the mattress.

You should also flip your mattress every now and again. You should be doing this at least every 6 months unless the mattress is still new. If the mattress is still new you should still rotate it every month or so within the first 6 months. Check on the instruction manual from the manufacturer to ensure you are rotating the mattress correctly.

How To Clean Your Bed

Similar to your mattress, the frame of the bed is also not hard to keep clean. Unless the manufacturer has called for a specific type of cleaner, all you really require is warm water and a clean microfiber cloth.

Dampen the cloth in the water followed by wiping all the surfaces of the bed frame. If the frame features details or ornate carvings make sure you work into the crevices with your cloth. Make sure you rinse the cloth a couple of times, to avoid spreading the dirt which has collected on your cloth.
