How often should you vacuum?

Vacuuming your house might not be rocket science, but doing it efficiently to save time and effort requires expertise. For example, how often should you do it? Does every room in your home require the same attention?

The answer to those questions may change depending on a few things. However, don’t worry about figuring them out on your own! Down below, you’ll find which factors could affect your vacuuming schedule so you can create one that fits you well.

How often should you run your vacuum cleaner on your floors?

Due to their peculiarities, different floors require different levels of vacuuming attention. Let’s break down the most common:

  • Hard flooring (like vinyl and tile). These floors don’t hold much dust due to their smoothness. A weekly vacuum session with the highest suction power setting is the move. Floors with grout? Hit it with a quick sweep before vacuuming to loosen the dirt.
  • Hardwood. Finished wood floors need a weekly vacuum session to keep the dust from creepin’. Unfinished wood? Crank it up to twice a week, and follow the grain to snatch up all that pesky dust.
  • Carpeted. Fluff in carpets is a dust magnet. A thrice-weekly vacuuming is needed, especially if you’re flaunting that high-pile carpet. Low-traffic zones or low-pile setups? You can get along by vacuuming them twice a week.

Remember to vacuum mattresses and upholstery too

Your mattresses and upholstery can also benefit from regular vacuuming care. Even if you put covers over them, they might need it.

Your mattress might be hiding lots of dust, mainly comprised of dead skin and nasty dust mites. Plan a vacuuming session twice a year. Spring cleaning and October (the end of dust mite season) are the optimal dates!

Upholstered furniture is a little different. Monthly sessions for the less-used pieces, like headboards. Your everyday couch and cushions? They’ll need weekly vacuuming to keep them in top shape.

What if you have pets?

When you have pets (especially if you have them indoors), you’re bound to find hair in almost any area of your home. If you’re in a constant battle with pet hair, a quick daily vacuum is exactly what you need.

Tight on time? No sweat! A thorough vacuuming two or three times a week will keep things in check, depending on your pet’s shedding habits.

Don’t skip the ceilings and walls!

Ceilings and walls might not be the most common areas to receive vacuum care, but they need attention from time to time to stay dust-free.

Forget vacuuming ceilings and walls like you do the floors. There’s no need to go through the whole area from end to end. Focus on the dusty nooks, sly cobwebs, and spots behind frames. Carry out the vacuuming sessions monthly or quarterly, depending on how dusty the house gets.
